Marji’s German Chocolate Goof

Fellow author Marji Laine found a new recipe for pancakes–though that’s not what she was aiming for~~~

I am a Cooking Calamity. In college, for my then-fiancé’s birthday, I baked a triple layer cake. My very first attempt at making something without shortcuts. I’d made boxed desserts before, but I’d never even witnessed a cake being made from scratch.

German-Chocolate-cake-1024x792This dessert was to be German Chocolate. Not such a difficult recipe, but for someone rather incapable in the kitchen, it proved quite challenging. So I worked doubly hard to make sure I had all of those spices and details measured out perfectly.

I was so excited to put the cake in the oven. Everything looked perfect, and my fiancé and his family were bound to be impressed. Thirty-five minutes later, the anticipation went south. Along with the thickness of my cakes. They looked more like pancakes than layers. In fact, with all three parts stacked and filled, the complete cake was only as thick as one layer should have been.

I couldn’t figure out why the cake had turned out so lean, but without another dessert option, or the time to make another cake entirely, I had to bring it to the party anyway. Luckily it tasted okay, though a little on the chewy side. And my fiancé’s sweet family took seconds.

Although, the next time I baked a cake for a family celebration, my new mother-in-law mentioned that I should be sure to use eggs in the preparation.

Really? I forgot the one thing that I was accustomed to putting into the batter? Shamefully, yes. But it provided a laugh for years to come on Sweet Hubby’s birthday.
