Good Ol’ Vittles Gone Bad

Smoking OvenAs a newlywed, I wanted to make a good impression on my husband as to my ability to keep his belly full of good southern cooking. My skills weren’t that bad; I had prepared meals for my family on many occasions. Naturally, there were some recipes I conquered better than others.

My hubby and I moved into an older house which we were renting from an elderly couple at the church. They had given us the freedom to “update” the rooms with fresh coats of paint and wallpaper.

A little over a week after our wedding, I finally had the opportunity to wow my honey with some good ol’ vittles. Of course I chose something I knew I could do well – the Baptist bird, chicken. I prepared it for the oven, preheating as I made final additions.

Just as I was ready to slide the chicken concoction into the oven, I caught a whiff of something. The something didn’t smell pleasant. In fact, it took my hubby only moments to arrive in the kitchen, asking what that awful smell was.

“Do you have something in the oven?” he asked.

“Not yet.” I replied innocently.

My husband yanked open the oven door and a puff of smoke billowed out. The odor was like burning plastic and paper. Fanning away the fog, he stooped to get a better look. He immediately retrieved a hot pad, grinning from ear to ear.

When he displayed the charred remains, he chuckled. “Our first meal as a married couple: smoked oven directions.”

Even though we’ve been married almost 24 years, I still haven’t lived down that failed recipe!

  1. Was it the oven instructions or the oven mitt that burned? My brain didn’t quite catch that. Regardless, how funny! Wonder how long it took for the smell to go away.
