Sad, sad news. Since I posted this, Chris and her husband sold their home and property on the Guadalupe River, including the river loft. I know this post will get the occasional search-engine hit, so let me just announce: The Terrapin Loft is no longer in business. The new owner chose not to continue with it.
Just as I promised, here it is: our home away from home in the Texas Hill Country, the Terrapin River Loft, located on the Guadalupe River not far from New Braunfels. (I wrote about the owner, Chris Summers, last year and the post disappeared into
cyberspace. On some wild chance someone remembers, she’s the one who makes wetsuits for skin/scuba divers–that’s her on the right, modeling one of her suits.)
The loft is in a residential area in Sattler, Texas, but from the balcony, the only thing noticeable is the peace, the trees and the river–especially since we go during a time most tourists are gone. Facing the balcony, Chris and her husband live on the right and a neighbor we’ve never seen lives on the left, so it’s really quiet.
The first thing we do after unloading our things is to run down to the river. 
The Guadalupe is beautiful and just as clear as it can get (when it hasn’t rained). And, of course, it’s chock full of our little feathered friends.
Tony brought our grandson out too, and I can promise Joey had a good time with the ducks! He also had a good time in the aquarium in Cabella’s in Buda:

What a awesome place to take a vacation! A loft sounds just like my idea of camping, off the ground and surrounded by somewhat 4 walls. Sounds like you had a great time with your grandson! We have a Cabellas here as well but have never been, will have to make a trip now!

@ Shaddy: It is! I wish all our g-kids lived closer! How much fun would *that* be! All seven of them!!
@ Annie: It’s a beautiful place, and we go at a great time of year. It’s still warm, the leaves are just beginning to turn, and there’s no one around to break the peace! The loft is wonderful–sounds more rustic than it is.
PS–you’ll enjoy Cabella’s.
