Jesus Calling

Jesus CallingI hate to say this since many of my friends write devotionals, but generally speaking, I don’t like them. Awful, isn’t it? But so many devotionals just make me feel guilty. Usually, after a long, touching story, the author asks a question, something along the lines of, “What about you? Do you love God enough?” “Do you live your life in prayer?” “Do you have unshakable faith?”

The answer is usually “no.” I am not meeting the demands presented by the author–which often means I’m not doing as God demands. Another word for this is “conviction.” And after a week’s worth of reading devotionals, I’m pretty much convicted that I’m the world’s worst Christian and should, as Martin Luther did, flog my back until it’s shredded meat. I’m not sure how much I’m exaggerating here. Over the years, I’ve read devotionals that left me totally questioning my salvation.

Truth of the matter is, there is nothing good in me, and if you want to convict me of how evil I am, it doesn’t take much. I’m well aware of that fact.

Thank God for His Son!

If not for the great sacrifice, I would have no hope. And I know that.

So, for the longest time, I stopped reading devotionals entirely, except for a precious few by Lynn Mosher, Sandy King, or Lisa Buffaloe–and I’m not a regular on any of their sites.

But recently, I found Sarah Young’s Jesus Calling.

Oh, this is a wonderful book! Sarah provided some of the most encouraging thoughts and verses I’ve seen in a long time. The reminder is clear on every page–yeah, I’m awful, but He still loves me, and He’s not going to toss me aside just because I sin and fall short of His glory. This book concentrates on trusting Him, entering His peace, and remembering how deep and unshakable His love is.

Yeah, I can read this on a daily basis. Particularly now, when so much going on in my life is scary and out of my hands.

If you’re ready to see how much He loves you instead of how much you’ve disappointed Him, grab Jesus Calling.

Guess what? There’s an article about me in the March/April 2013 edition of Southern Writers MagazineI’m honored! This is both a print mag and an ezine, so I’ve had a little step up from being on blogs. Cool, huh?

{sniff-sniff} I’m in tears. I was getting ready to change the way I write and then you toss in my name (along with precious Lisa and Sandy). I am so honored. Thank you!

I love Jesus Calling. And my favorite is God Calling. I have worn out several since the late ’70s. There is a companion/second book but it’s out of print. God has so changed my life through God Calling. So comforting and encouraging.

Hmmm…I think I’ll have to take a second look at how I write anyway! Love you! ❤

  3. I’ve read those “guilt-inducing” devotionals too. There’s one popular devotional author in particular that just makes me squirm. But there are *so* many great inspirational books out there. If you haven’t The God of All Comfort, I highly recommend it. One of my favorites lately.

I’m totally with you there! I already struggle with feeling “less than” and unloveable by God and fighting the “need” to earn His Love. I do know all that is incorrect, but it doesn’t make those long ingrained beliefs & feelings go away entirely. That’s one of the reasons I named my blog LEARNING to Be. And I do love Jesus Calling….hits me right where I need it most of the time!

Chrystal, I know what you mean. There is no way we can be “worthy” of His love, but we certainly don’t need to be reminded how unworthy we are. The fact that He loves me never fails to amaze me. I hope you concentrate on that, too. He loves you!

I love Jesus Calling, and have found an even better one. It’s called Heaven Calling. It’s written in the same fashion, but by different authors. One of the things I like is that it takes you from Genesis – Revelation, and you read a longer portion of scripture. See what you think. 🙂

  6. I, too read Jesus Calling every day. But surprise–after a couple years of Sarah Young’s gentle devotional, I’ve returned to also reading Oswald Chambers’ My Utmost for His Highest. The combination of the two is great–no guilt; just a “hey, pay attention” (from Ozwald) followed by a sweet “because I love you” (from Young). Works well together.

Great review of our Miss Young’s beautiful devo.
